Its
really hard to feel like you’re on track! We have our goals, and one of
two things can happen - either we get to the goal or we don’t. Either
way it actually can be a bad experience. If you’re in the first
category, you might have set the target too low. In the second, nothing
is more discouraging than not achieving your goal. This is made worse by
the myriad of planners out there, all built with the assumption that
you’ll open this thing every day and plan out your new Awesome Self.
But
life is complex! There is a whole science around complexity (CAS) but
suffice it to say you can’t plan into complexity. Either you’ll change,
or the situation will change, or both.
The
Life Sparcs approach is to leverage adaptive planning techniques such as
Agile and Lean, taken from Software Development, is a way to chop up
your goals into simple chunks. You can try it on your own by
establishing your goals and pushing them through a simple process I call
SPARC:
- Establish your Goals, Dreams, or Musings. Where are you at ? What , if you had a magic wand, would you make true? - write it down
- Now think about this week, starting on Sunday. What’s your current Situation? are you searching for something new? are you trying to get that degree? On a new piece of paper, write it down on the top. Below that, write down the Possibility, the potential win you expect if you can resolve your situation.
- Now think about your week ahead. What 10 things can you do to advance your possibility. These will be your Action steps. Next to them put “Doing and Done” checkbox.
- Renewal needs to happen ! If these things were easy, you would have gotten there already. Find a list of fun things that you can do that will keep your tank full. Write down what you’ve done to renew as you’ve completed the Actions, which will provide you an excellent database of what renews you.
- Coach and Collect is the final portion of the SPARC process. At the end of the week, take a look at the Actions you’ve checked off. What have you gotten done? 60% of them ? 20% ? GREAT! Remember, even a low percentage of items is still progress. Then ask yourself - do I need help? A coach can take many forms, including “self-help” books to actual coaches. Personally I’ve found podcasts and audio books to be great ‘coaches’, and inexpensive, but there’s nothing like having a coffee with a trusted advisor. If you can swing it, a life coach to help you see your life through someone else’s eyes.
That’s how I approach navigation of
my life- weekly asking if I’m doing the right thing, and going the
right way, reflecting and writing and measuring
